Gibson Family of Craven County, South Carolina

Yesterday was a "South Carolina Research" day for me.  No, I did not travel to South Carolina.  I simply perused online books available through GoogleBooks (quite a few, I might add) about the history of South Carolina.  And yes, I am still looking for the parents of my great-great-great-grandfather, John P. Gibson, born about 1799 in South Carolina. Thanks to bits and pieces of Gibson family history found in one of those online books, I have now confirmed that Gideon Gibson and Jordan Gibson, born in the 1700s, were brothers. I was unsuccessful, however, in uncovering the names of their parents who had allegedly migrated to Craven County, South Carolina from Virginia.  Next, I plan to research the descendants of these two Gibson brothers, Jordan and Gideon - it stands to reason that John P. Gibson, must be one of them.  

A Poem for Sunday - "Two Friends, The Red and the White"

Recently, while reading through History of the Choctaw, Chickasaw and Natchez Indians, available on Google Books, I ran upon a poem entitled "Two Friends, The Red And The White." Although this poignant poem was included in the book to reflect upon close relationships that existed between Native Americans and their non-tribal neighbors, anyone who has ever had a close friend can relate to the thoughts expressed in the words. Since the poet's name was not provided, I am simply referencing its inclusion in the book mentioned above.

The Porter Family - Alabama>Mississippi

Recently, while researching online for information about one of my Porter ancestors, I found a book entitled Some Alabama Pioneers, written by Madge Pettit, on GoogleBooks. Although I was unable to locate the family members for whom I searched, I did learn more about the early Porter family that settled in Lancaster County, Virginia and who migrated first to South Carolina, and then to places in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

If you are searching for southern branches of your Porter family, I highly recommend this book.
