Just Released - New Book of Historical Photographs of Kosciusko and Attala County, Mississippi

If you have roots in or connections to Kosciusko, Mississippi, or Attala County, you may want to know about a new book of historical photographs, compiled and just released by Thomas Craft, a local photographer, and the Kosciusko/Attala Historical Society. The books are $20 each, if picked up, and $23 if they are purchased through the mail. Also, the books can be ordered directly from the Historical Society and from the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce (KADC), or they may be purchased through the Attala County Library in Kosciusko. For those who prefer to order over the phone, please contact the KADC at 662.289.2981, or the Attala County Library at 662.289.5141. Proceeds from book sales will go to the Attala Historical Society. I'm sure you will want to purchase your copy soon. As we all know, a picture is worth 1,000 words, something that is especially true with historical photographs!

Kosciusko/Attala County History Books and CDs

Today, I was in contact with Ann Breedlove who works in the Genealogy Room of the Attala County Library in Kosciusko, Mississippi. According to Ann, Thomas Craft, a member of the Kosciusko/Attala Historical Society, stopped by the library today and mentioned that only 40 copies of the history of Kosciusko and Attala County remain available for purchase. Also, Craft mentioned that only 20 CDs containing pictures of old buildings in Kosciusko remain for sale.

Ann has asked me to include this information in one of my posts so that anyone interested in purchasing the book or the CD would know that limited copies of these items are available for purchase. If anyone is interested in purchasing either the book or the CD, please refer to the information below.

The cost of the history book is $35, plus $5 for postage. The cost of the CD containing photos is $20, plus $3.50 for postage. If the book or the CD is ordered directly from the historical society, payment can be made with one check that should also include the amount for postage.

If the order is made through Ann Breedlove at the Attala County Library, however, a check for the purchase amount of the CD ($20) or the book ($35) should be made out directly to "Kosciusko/Attala Historical Society," with a separate check written for the amount of postage. The check for postage should be made payable to "Attala County Library."

Froggie's Friday Book Review - "The People of Shrock, Mississippi - 1895 - 1922"

Duncan C. Covington's book entitled "The People of Shrock, Mississippi 1895 - 1922" as seen by writers of local newspapers, is a compilation of Covington family history information and community news. The book was published privately in College Station, Texas, in soft cover form. Duncan graciously provided me with my own personal copy of his book, and I have been amazed with the plethora of information about Attala County people and events contained within its 273 pages.

Included in the book are transcriptions of local newspaper articles about families who lived in or near the Shrock community between 1895 and 1922. These newsy articles chronicle significant events in the daily lives of the residents of this early Attala County community and provide information about birthdays, engagements, marriages, and deaths. Various community events are chronicled, as well, and allow the reader a microscopic look at the social and economic life in Attala County around the turn of the twentieth century and continuing on into pre-depression years.

Also included in his book is a history of Duncan's own Covington family, told in story and in photographs. While many of the wonderful, old photographs are copies made from originals, some were made from glass negatives owned by the Covington family and included in the family's extensive collection of family documents and memorabilia. The book's 49-page index contains a list of "the people of Shrock" named in the publication and is a treasure trove of information for family history researchers.

In summary, if you are searching for information about your ancestors who lived or passed through Attala County, Mississippi between 1895 and 1922, I highly recommend Duncan's book as an important addition to your genealogy toolbox. In keeping with his reputation of being a dedicated Attala County native son, Duncan has donated a copy of "The People of Shrock - 1895 - 1922" to the Attala County Library in Kosciusko, Mississippi, part of the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System Library, where it can be found in the genealogy research room.
